This is the whole poem:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>No man is an Iland, intire of itselfe; every man<br \/>\nis a peece of the Continent, a part of the maine;<br \/>\nif a Clod bee washed away by the Sea, Europe<br \/>\nis the lesse, as well as if a Promontorie were, as<br \/>\nwell as if a Manor of thy friends or of thine<br \/>\nowne were; any mans death diminishes me,<br \/>\nbecause I am involved in Mankinde;<br \/>\nAnd therefore never send to know for whom<br \/>\nthe bell tolls; It tolls for thee.<\/p>\n<p>This is MEDITATION XVII from<br \/>\n\u201cDevotions upon Emergent Occasions\u201d<br \/>\nby John Donne, 1623<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The date is unbelievable: 400 years ago.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Later\u00a0I lifted a comment from a colleague into the body of the post:<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<blockquote><p>John Donne, as well as Francis Bacon and probably Shakespeare, might have read a version of Montaigne Essays (1580,1598,\u2026).
